This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
