In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
