Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
