The star has donated the full amount of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which works to save the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

He was awarded the award on mid-October as his new release the album was named the top album of the previous year.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages had in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Fender also participated, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous small stages across Britain.

The donation supported spaces that were facing imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in improving amenities and gear that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

When they earned the award in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman the singer announced that the group would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

That year, artist Ms Dynamite divided her prize between a few charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Previously, they gave their winnings to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year the group gave their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated singer the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our success touched another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in that location were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
