Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

However, Marseille struck two times late to seize a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
