The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
